Upcakes!

The upcake is the sweeter big sister to the cupcake. It has no wrapper, and when frosted, looks like a little cupcake mountain. Why make the switch to upcakes? More icing! There are a few tricks to baking these adorable sweets, so read on!

The ingredients are the same as a cupcake, but rather than being baked in cupcake tins, I baked mine in little tomato sauce tin cans. There's a good reason for the smaller size of the can, aside from the preportions. You'll find out about that later. To prep the cans for baking, spray the inside with cooking spray, and cover the side in a cut roll of parchment paper. I put in about 1/3 cup of batter into each tin, and mine slid right out after baking!

To frost, hold lightly at the top and the bottom, like you're pinching it, and roll the upcake around while slathering frosting on the sides. (If you use a standard size can for baking you won't be able to manage this move, your upcake will be too wide to hold and frost in this way.) Load up those sides with sprinkles, before you set the upcake down.

The frosted sides make the upcake really hard to move after frosting, so I set mine down on squares of parchment paper so that I could transport them to storage after decorating.

Now it's time to frost the top... lay that icing on, and try to smooth out the place where the top and sides meet.

Upcakes are really too messy to pick up with your hands, you'll want to use a fork, and I know where you can get some really cute ones

I don't know about you, but my whole family is ready to make the permanent switch from cupcakes to upcakes! My favorite vanilla cupcake recipe, and the one I used, is from Cupcake Project, and I love their vanilla frosting too.

Do upcakes really exist? Yes! I searched to find what I could and came up with a lot of "Up" movie themed cakes. But I first saw an upcake, as shown above, on my Instagram feed. I can't remember who posted it, but they were visiting a diner in Pennsylvania called Dixie Picnic, and I think they are the ones who created the upcake. I've changed the shape a little to make them much more vertical.

Go forth and tell all of your friends about upcakes!

Ranch Oyster Crackers - The Best Neighbor Gift

My mom never liked to bake like I do, but she still managed to make these ranch oyster crackers every year. It's because they're super easy and yummy, and everyone needs a little easy and yummy in their life.

I make a huge batch every year and run around to all the neighbors houses handing them out as holiday gifts, and they're always happy to see me. Or maybe it's just the oyster crackers!

Alphabet Pasta Toppers For Ice Cream

I am rebelling against the idea of "cupcake toppers" because I think that term discriminates against ice cream!

I love the alphabet pasta bobby pin tutorial I keep seeing on pinterest, and I remembered seeing a cake topper made with alphabet pasta awhile back. I mean, why stick to sprinkles and whipped cream on top of ice cream? The little gingerbread boy is a cake decoration I picked up from the grocery store, and I think he looks perfectly happy to be on top of a mountain of ice cream!

Get a little creative and stick them in your sprinkles too!

Last year I was asked by Houzz.com to put together a Hanukkah dessert table. It was, of course, my pleasure, and a year later I am still really happy with how it all came together! I hope you'll enjoy too, and pin away...

To see more elements, keep reading!

This sprinkle station is for decorating your own donuts! The olive oil bottles are filled with honey and sweetened condensed milk, which gets poured on top of the donut, and then the sprinkles go on top. Scoops are in our shop

I made these cookies just by punching a small circle out of the center of the cookie before baking. Striped straws are always fun!

Oh, here's the decorated donut I was talking about before! With one of our celebratory forks

These were all things I baked and little elements I put together. I had so much fun creating the blue ombre tray of cupcakes, and it was pretty quick.

There is pudding inside of those little "menorah" glasses!

Ok, that's it! Hope you have lots of great ides and have fun this year at your Thanksgivukkah, I mean Hanukkah, celebration! (If you are looking for more on Thanksgivukkah, see our post about ideas for a Handmade Thanksgivukkah, and also visit our Thanksgivukkah Pinterest board, we have lots of fun things going on over there!)

DIY Kits... Options, Options, Options!

Have we mentioned how we're just a littttlllle bit in love with our DIY kits?
Let me give you the quick run down: the kit includes 20 blank ice cream spoons and 20 vinyl stickers, specially cut to exactly fit onto the handle of the spoon. The stickers are fun and easy to adhere, and hold fast once in position. (Don't worry, the kit comes with simple instructions!)

Why use our DIY kits?
Look at how bright and bold the colors are! In many cases we can only do single color printing on our utensils when doing it by hand, here we have great color combos, including sparkly metallic gold! The colors are non-fade, non-smear, and you get to do it yourself, which is just plain good times.

It comes in a cute little package, shown top right, which would slide so easily into a holiday stocking!!

Typography Cotton Candy

I am the parent who lets their kids get cotton candy at baseball games, then discretely eats 1/2 of the bag. Why do I love it? It's yummy, and looks just so sweet in it's pretty pastel colors... you could almost say cotton candy just speaks to me. And now it's actually does!

Typography cotton candy starts with edible wafer paper, the kind use to make cupcake tattoos, which can be purchased at local bakeshops and online. Since wafer paper dissolves in water, to color it I applied a light coat of Wilton's spray on food coloring. The spray works great because it colors the paper without making it too wet.

You can use a stencil for the letters, if you want to make them exact. I can imagine whimsical tables full of monogrammed cotton candy for birthday parties and weddings. (I want to go to those parties!) I cut mine free hand so that I could play with different shapes and find what I liked best.

Attaching the letters or graphics to your cotton candy isn't be difficult, but it night be a little tricky. The only thing needed to attach the wafer paper is a little moisture. Depending on the moisture in the air, the wafer paper may just stick to the cotton candy. If it doesn't stick on its own, you can dip your finger in a little water and dab it on the cotton candy. Just take care not to use more than just the slightest bit of water or it will cause your pretty cotton candy to bead up!

That's all there is to it... now, go and fancy up your cotton candy and make your party a little prettier.

Outdoor Movie Night!

We're celebraing warmer weather and the end of the school year with an outdoor movie screening! For info on how to get started, visit this article on setting up your outdoor theatre.

Once you've got the technical side down, it's time for the fun part: popcorn!

We've made our own popcorn bowls using a roll of tickets. Check out our DIY to find out how we did it.

To protect the ticket bowl and make it reusable, we layered it with aluminum foil before loading it up with popcorn.

We set out a few topping: cinnamon sugar, parmasean mixed with a little garlic salt, and trail mix (candy coated sunflowers and craisins), which we're serving with our striped scoops.

Another great gift idea: give a ticket bowl, some scoops and popcorn! It doesn't get much more fun for Summer.

How To Make A Ticket Bowl

These ticket bowls are so adorable! Ticket bowls are great accessories for parties and they also make the best gifts. Best yet, you don't have to be a crafty person to make a ticket bowl, anyone can do it.

Here's how to make a ticket bowl:

You'll need to purchase rolls of tickets, which you can probably pick up locally, at Party City, or order online from http://www.funcarnival.com, which links to Carnival Mart, a local store here in St. Louis with every party item imaginable.

We made our ticket bowls by simply pushing the ticket roll into bowl form. You can gently pull up the sides, and turn the ticket roll as you're working to be sure the shape is even. The tickets are wound into a roll so tightly that the bowl will stay on it's own, no glue is needed to hold it in place!

If you're interested in gifting these, you may want to add a layer or two of modge podge to laquer it. The spray works great for this! We kept things all natural and left off the spray so we wouldn't worry about the bowls being food safe for our popcorn.

You can find toppings scoops by Sucre Shop here.

Hope you enjoyed this ticket bowl DIY and run out to make some of your own. Stay turned to find out what else we planned for our outdoor movie night!
